Call for Papers: International Toy Research Association 7th World Congress
15 October 2013
The International Toy Research Association (ITRA) has issued a call for papers on the subject of “Toys as Language and Communication,” to be presented at the upcoming 7th World Congress in Braga, Portugal from 23-25 July 2014.
Proposed topics may cover: the signs and meanings of different toys; toys as verbal and non-verbal language; toy narratives and metaphors; toys as texts in spatial, historical and sociocultural contexts; toy creativity and design; toys, gender and generations; toys and education, health and environment; toys and media (including production, marketing, and consumption); and toys / games and new technologies.
“[Toys] are inextricably linked to the history of human civilization,” states the ITRA. “It remains an important task to analyse and understand toys as instruments fostering well-being, interaction and knowledge. Thus, the connection between toys and other elements of communication and language can be seen as an inevitable theme for toy researchers.”
Individuals who wish to present a paper, organize a symposium or present a poster must submit abstracts / proposals (in English) by 15 December 2013 to Luisa Magalhães. Guidelines and more information can be found online.
Founded in 1993, the ITRA is devoted to promoting toy and plaything research on a global level in order to spread knowledge about toys and encourage the development of good toys for children. Held every three years, the ITRA World Congress brings toy researchers from around the world together to discuss research, collaborate on international projects, and exchange information with other scholars, students and leaders in the toy industry. Previously, conferences were held in Halmstad, Sweden; London, England; Alicante, Spain; Nafplion, Greece; and Bursa, Turkey. The 7th ITRA World Congress will take place at the Catholic University of Portugal in Braga. Visit the conference website to learn more.
