1,000 Children at U.S. Naval Station Rota in Spain Get New Toys from Toy Industry Foundation
TIF and Boys & Girls Clubs of America Bring Holiday Cheer to Troops and Kids
ROTA, SPAIN | December 11, 2015
The holidays came early for nearly 1,000 deserving children and their families stationed at U.S. Naval Station Rota in Spain on December 11th, when the Toy Industry Foundation Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) Military Services arrived with brand-new toys to delight boys and girls of all ages.
The toys were delivered to the installation through TIF’s Play Comforts program, launched in 2010 with BGCA to comfort military families and show appreciation for their many sacrifices. To date, Play Comforts has provided 1.7 million toys valued at $6.2 million to children living on U.S. military bases worldwide.
“Providing these kids and their families with the emotionally healing power of play is our industry’s way of thanking our service members and their families for the sacrifices they make to keep our country safe,” said Jean Butler, TIF Executive Director. “As the holidays draw near, it’s tough for these children to be so far from their friends and extended family back at home. We want them to know that we are thinking about them and the struggles that they face each day.”
"This event gives me peace of mind that he'll be entertained, well taken care of and will learn something,” said Isarielina Guzman, Administrative Officer and mother of seven-year-old Logan Harris. “As a single mom, it's tough because he runs out of things to do and he'll be challenged with these toys for a long time.”
Play Comforts is the first-ever national toy distribution program to canvas every branch of the U.S. military. Each year, TIF works with BGCA to identify military bases that are most in need of toys due to high deployment rates and other factors, and hosts special events at select bases, like the one held on last week in Spain. In addition to a toy giveaway, these unique events are a wonderful opportunity for families to get together, relax, and enjoy a fun-filled day of laughter and play.
Playthings delivered to military bases are donated by generous toy manufacturers, retailers and distributors to TIF’s Toy Bank. By the end of this year, Play Comforts will have impacted the lives of families at 208 military bases over the life of the program.
